U.S. stocks mixed at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average up 0.15%

Investing.com – U.S. stocks were mixed after the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Utilities, Telecoms and Oil & Gas sectors led shares higher while losses in the Technology, Consumer Services and Consumer Goods sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.15%, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.81%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 2.35%.

The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD), which rose 2.74% or 6.52 points to trade at 244.52 at the close. Meanwhile, Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) added 2.03% or 1.01 points to end at 50.68 and International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) was up 2.01% or 2.63 points to 133.80 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS), which fell 4.01% or 4.24 points to trade at 101.59 at the close. Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) declined 3.76% or 4.67 points to end at 119.40 and Visa Inc Class A (NYSE:V) was down 2.38% or 4.93 points to 202.63.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were AutoZone Inc (NYSE:AZO) which rose 5.82% to 1,910.22, O’Reilly Automotive Inc (NASDAQ:ORLY) which was up 5.02% to settle at 608.18 and Alliant Energy Corp (NASDAQ:LNT) which gained 3.93% to close at 61.32.

The worst performers were Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd (NYSE:NCLH) which was down 11.99% to 13.29 in late trade, DexCom Inc (NASDAQ:DXCM) which lost 11.05% to settle at 288.13 and Caesars Entertainment Corporation (NASDAQ:CZR) which was down 10.59% to 43.14 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Better Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:BTTX) which rose 69.77% to 2.19, Americas Car-Mart Inc (NASDAQ:CRMT) which was up 30.76% to settle at 99.98 and Quantum Computing Inc (NASDAQ:QUBT) which gained 25.48% to close at 1.97.

The worst performers were Genocea Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:GNCA) which was down 72.69% to 0.06 in late trade, Walkme Ltd (NASDAQ:WKME) which lost 34.43% to settle at 8.00 and TC BioPharm Holdings PLC (NASDAQ:TCBP) which was down 34.15% to 0.78 at the close.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 1835 to 1329 and 133 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2814 fell and 1015 advanced, while 183 ended unchanged.

Shares in Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd (NYSE:NCLH) fell to 52-week lows; falling 11.99% or 1.81 to 13.29. Shares in DexCom Inc (NASDAQ:DXCM) fell to 52-week lows; down 11.05% or 35.79 to 288.13. Shares in Caesars Entertainment Corporation (NASDAQ:CZR) fell to 52-week lows; falling 10.59% or 5.11 to 43.14. Shares in Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) fell to 52-week lows; down 4.01% or 4.24 to 101.59. Shares in Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) fell to 52-week lows; falling 3.76% or 4.67 to 119.40. Shares in Genocea Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ:GNCA) fell to all time lows; losing 72.69% or 0.16 to 0.06. Shares in Walkme Ltd (NASDAQ:WKME) fell to all time lows; losing 34.43% or 4.20 to 8.00. Shares in TC BioPharm Holdings PLC (NASDAQ:TCBP) fell to all time lows; down 34.15% or 0.40 to 0.78.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 3.41% to 29.45.

Gold Futures for June delivery was up 0.98% or 18.05 to $1,865.85 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in July fell 0.41% or 0.45 to hit $109.84 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract fell 0.12% or 0.13 to trade at $110.65 a barrel.

EUR/USD was unchanged 0.43% to 1.07, while USD/JPY fell 0.80% to 126.85.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.32% at 101.77.
